<The importance of smiling and kindness>

        Ladies and Gentlemen, good evening.

Today I’d like to talk about the importance of smiling and kindness.

        Life is like a mirror.

When you smile, people will smile back.

When you treat other people kindly,

they will treat you kindly in return.

Try to spend one day smiling and being kind

        to everyone you meet.

You will see a big difference in your life.

If you keep on smiling and being kind,

smiling and kindness will become your habits.

If everyone tried to do this, the world would

be a kinder, brighter, and happier place.

        Start smiling right away.

        That’s all. Thank you.

<I want to change my life >

I work extremely hard every day, but I’m very tired. I need to work smarter, not harder.

I must find better ways to do my job.

I must find more time to enjoy life.

I know hard work is a part of everybody’s life. But I work too hard.

My hard work is ruining my health.

My hard work is killing me.

Other people have time for fun,

going to bars and going to parties.

All I do is get in my car and go to work every day. This life is too hard.

I need to make a fresh start.

        <Life is about choices>

        Ladies and Gentlemen,

I want to tell you something very important today. I want to tell you that life is about choices.

You can choose to be miserable

or you can choose to enjoy life.

You can choose to improve your health

or you can choose to destroy it.

I hope you will make correct choices.

I hope you will choose to

        enjoy your family,

        enjoy your friends,

        enjoy your work,

        and enjoy your everyday life.

        Life is a gift

and we really should enjoy every minute of it.

Join the group of people who make good choices. Enjoy your life!

        <The secret of happiness>

        Ladies and Gentlemen,

today I’m going to talk about happiness.

        Where does happiness come from?

It doesn’t come from other people.

It doesn’t come from material things.

It doesn’t come from having a lot of money and power. It doesn’t come from being popular.

It comes from giving love to other people.

It comes from giving your best effort to everything you do. It comes from getting satisfaction from helping other people. It comes from growing smarter and wiser every day. The happiness you feel is equal to the love you give. The more you give, the happier you will be.

        <Three Tips about life>

        Ladies and Gentlemen, good evening.

There are three things I want to talk about today. The first thing is, think before you speak.

Say positive things, don’t hurt other people with words.

The second thing is, treasure every breath.

        Life is precious.

We shouldn’t take anything for granted.

The third thing is, nothing is impossible.

If you think you can, you can.

        Never doubt yourself.

        You can do anything.

These three things have helped me throughout my life. Thank you.

We must be thankful for every breath.

        Chen Huijun

We each long to do something great with our life. But what is greatness? How can a person really make an impact on the world around them? How can we ex-perience the quality of life? The

definition of the qual-ity of life may differ from person to person. The way for people to achieve a quality of life may vary from one another.

However one thing is certain, the quality of life is measured by little things.

"Every day we're called to do small things with great love." Thus claimed the U.S. President Gorge W. Bush in his inaugural speech. Through touching every little thing, Helen Keller knew the outer world, and longed for three days to see to emphasize sharply the values of life. And I still remember my childhood dream was to become a millionaire so I could bring about a happy life to my parents. But now it seems that by frequent going back home, or a simple phone call to my family on a very ordinary day or a letter enclosed with a smiling picture of me makes thern even happier. How much greater difference can these little things make than a million yuan.

The so-called little things are merely the causes of great things; they are the beginning, the embryo, and it is the point of

departure, which generally speaking, decides the whole future of the quality of life.

To strengthen the relationship with my friends, I always wonder, how can it really work without our mu-tual understanding and support by communication. To show my sincere appreciation for my

teachers'persis-tence in giving the lectures when they are ill, what can be better than extending a cup of tea to them during the break or a piece of greeting words. To fulfill my obligation to society, I'd like to begin from giving my hands and showing my love to those in need.

It is by studying the little things that we attain the great art of having a quality life. Life is long, but no matter how long it takes me to go, I should and will cover it little by little and

reach the climax of my life at last, for I believe constant dripping wears away a stone.

So enjoy your life by doing the little things, for little things are what inspire great things.

        Thank you!

The Earth, the only Home for Human beings

        Jiang Shengliang

        Dear friends,

Good afternoon. I'm very glad to see you here. The topic of my speech is “The Earth, The Only Home For The Human Beings".

Do you know that dust storms had swept through North cities

several times this spring? Dust has enveloped the sun and turned the sky an eerie yellow. People haven't found a way to fight against the dust storms but to be in their homes and offices. Because a cloud of loess filled the whole sky, there were many traffic accidents, which loss in lives and property was beyond our estimates.

We know that China already produces 11 per cent of the world's greenhouse-gas emissions. We also know that the Huanghe River once dried up, the grassland of Inner Mongolia rapidly turns into desert and there are many cities where the water we live by is lacking. We can't forget that more than 4000 people who lived in London had been killed by thick black smog in the winter of 1952. We also are aware that nearly 50,000 species become extinct and 2.7 million acre lush, fertile cropland turns into barren land every year in the world...

These numbers are so startling; the scenes are too horrible to look at!

Of course, I am sure, everyone here like the blue sky and white clouds. There is no one who dislikes the clean river and verdant mountains extending a thousand li. We are eager to have a breath of fresh air freely. However, we have to deal with so much endless noise and breathe the air mixed up with dust. We have nothing to do but stride over so many sewage ditches...

This is the earth, our only homeland we human live on. It is the earth that supplies us with enough food, water and oxygen. It's also the earth that supplies us with deep enough atmospheric layer in order to protect us from the hurt of ultraviolet ray... Although the earth gives us all that she has, we still hurt her so deeply. She is covered all over with cuts and bruises. She is groaning and shedding tears. To our surprise, we human have been conscious that we will not survive if the earth remains to be hurt, but there is still so much sever deforestation and damage to the grassland. We still

waster raw materials, destroy forest for more arable land and don t save on water?

Wake up, wake up to reality. We have suffered so many heavy losses. Can t we come to realize our error? We must draw the lesson from them. We can t follow the same old road to ruin, and we can t sit here and watch our only home-the earth turning into another Loulan. Today, I stand here and want to call out at the top of my voice: the development of economy needn t pay the cost of

environment pollution. Please don t hurt our only home again. If the earth remains to be destroyed, if the land, water and atmosphere we lived by remains to be polluted, my dear friends, where will we go and live? So improving the environment is to save us human beings. Dear friends, let s begin to act now, act from us, act from trifles. I believe firmly that the earth will take on a new look if everyone tries one s best to do it.

My speech is over. Thank you!

        My Definition of Failure

        Mo Junhua

S-U-C-C-E-S-S. SUCCESS. Success is the catch-word of the times. It

goes without saying that almost all of us want to be successful. Like it or not, however, we must admit that it s not easy to achieve success. More often than not, we have to deal with its opposite, namely failure.

But first of all, what is failure? It is hard to define, because dif-ferent people have different answers. However, as far as I'm con-cerned, I think real failure is not to try hard.

It's commendable that you set your mind on the best and

con-stantly strive for it. At many times, however, it's unlikely that you'll do the best, because of the scarcity of No. 1 and because of the fact that the attainment of the very best involves many things, some of which are beyond your expectation. In addition to your own merit, that of your competitors also plays an important part. So it is a more sensible, but no less commendable thing for you to compete with yourself, not with others. You don t have to do best. But you should always try to do your best in whatever you are determined to do. If you have given it 100 percent, you are not a

failure, even though you are outplayed by others. Because you have given it 100 percent, there s nothing to regret, nor is there any need to blame yourself. Instead, you should give credit to yourself for trying.

I don t like finding excuses for our failures, because we haven t failed at all. Take myself for example. Last year, I eolled for the Sports Meet in my university and competed in the 3,000-meter race. I did this not because I m gifted in or good at running, but because I wanted to fulfill a childhood dream. I had been an

in-competent student of physical education or P.E., ever since I was a primary school student. As a weak student of P.E., I never got a chance to participate in a sports meet. I envied my classmates who were good at sports. I used to dream of becoming one of them and displaying my skills in a sports meet. After I entered university, I spent much of my spare time on physical exercises, such as running, the long jump. Although I can run much faster than before, I m not capable of winning a prize or a good place in a campus-wide run-ning competition. In spite of that, I still entered for the event,

be-cause I wanted to challenge myself and fulfill my athletic dream. I could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not going in for this race. But I chose to accept the challenge and face the difficul-ties. I trained hard for the race, so when I came out last but one in the competition, I didn t call my attempt a failure, because I had tried and struggled.

Real failure is not to try hard. “I will forgive myself if I fail; I won t forgive myself if I don't try”, because “It's better to have fought and lost than not to fight at all”.

Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic movement once said:“the most important thing in Olympic Games is not to win, but to take part, just like the most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well.”

But what if we did fail in something? Simple. First, don t panic, because failure is not the end of the world. As the English saying goes, he who falls today may rise tomorrow. Second, try, try again, because nothing is really over until the moment we stop try-ing. So long as we persist and never give up, we will succeed eventually. No failure is sweet. However, just as bitter medicine cures sickness, failure may prove to be very instructive, so long as we can put it in perspective. There is a saying that failure is the mother of success. It's natural for us to get depressed for a

certain period of time, but we shouldn't inflate the importance of our temporary setback and be disheartened by setbacks, even never recover. We should be undaunted by failures and motivated to strive

        第二天:MY DAILY LIFE 我的日常生活

Though my daily life is extremely monotonous, I try hard to adapt myself to it. Why? Because I intend to be a good student. I wish to render service to my country.

I get up at six o’clock every day. After I wash my face and brush my teeth, I begin to review my lessons. I go to school at seven o’clock.

After school is over, I return home. We usually have supper at seven o’clock.

Then I begin to do my homework. I want to finish it before I go to bed.

Do you mind being called a bad student? Of course not. So far as I know, everybody intends to be (become) a model student.

However, to be a model student is by no means an easy thing. First, he must do his best to obtain knowledge. A man without sufficient knowledge will not succeed. Secondly, he must remember to improve his health. Only a strong man can do great tasks. Thirdly, he should receive moral education. If his conduct is not good, no one will consider making friends with him.

        第四天:HOW TO GET HAPPINESS 如何獲得快樂(lè)

There is no doubt that happiness is the most precious thing in the world. Without it, life will be empty and meaningless. If you wish to know how to get happiness, you must pay attention to the following two points.

First, health is the secret of happiness (the key to happiness). Only a strong man can enjoy the pleasure of life.

Secondly, happiness consists in contentment. A man who is dissatisfied with his present condition is always in distress.

As is well known, books teach us to learn life, truth, science and many other useful things. They increase our knowledge, broaden our minds and strengthen our character. In other words, they are our good teachers and wise friends. This is the reason why our parents always encourage us to read more books.

Reading is a good thing, but we must pay great attention to the choice of books. It is true that we can derive benefits from good books. However, bad books will do us more harm than good.

A TRIP TO THE COUNTRY 鄉(xiāng)村游記

One Sunday my mother (Mother) had (made) me take my little young brother to the a trip to the country. She bade me take good care of him.

While we were walking along the road, the sun was shining brightly and the breeze was blowing gently. We saw the beautiful flowers smile (smiling) at us and heard the birds sing (singing) their sweet songs on the trees. The scenery was indeed very pretty (beautiful).

When we felt tired, we returned home. We saw Mother (our mother) wait (waiting) for us at the door.

        第七天:BE PATRIOTIC 要愛(ài)國(guó)

It is the duty of every citizen to make the country rich and powerful (To make the country rich and strong is...). In order to accomplish this object one must be patriotic (love his country). I consider this an unchangeable truth.

How can a student love his country (be patriotic)? I find my answer very simple and clear. He must study hard and store up knowledge so as to serve his (the) country in the future. If every student can do according to what I said, the country will certainly be rich and powerful.

        第八天:THE VALUE OF TIME 愛(ài)惜時(shí)光

An English proverb says that time is money. I consider it (this) wrong. Why? Because we all know that we can earn money be work but can not in any way get back time (in anyway). For this reason, we may (can) say that time is more valuable than money.

Many people do not know the value of time. It (this) is indeed a great pity. We must bear (keep) in mind that wasting time is equal to wasting your life.

WHY SHOULD WE STUDY ENGLISH 為什么我們要學(xué)英文

If you want to ask me why we should study English, my answer will be simple and clear. Now let me enumerate the reasons one by one in the following.

In the first place, English has become an international language. If you know English, you van make a trip round the world without being misunderstood.

In the second place, most valuable books, newspapers and magazines are written in English. If you wish (hope) to get knowledge, you must learn English.

Yesterday was my birthday, so some of my classmates sent me presents. Mother prepared a tea party for me. I invited all of them to come and take part in it.

The tea party began at half past six. There were cold drinks and refreshments. We ate, talked and laughed. We felt that we were the happiest men in the world.

Time passed quickly. In a twinkling, the clock on the wall struck nine. We could not but say ―Good-bye‖ to one another.

        第十一天:HOW TO SPEND SUNDAYS 如何消度星期日

Some of us always spend Sundays aimlessly. We can seldom derive profits from the valuable hours (time) of Sundays. This is indeed a great pity. Though Sundays are set aside as a day for rest, we must make good use of them.

We know that our school lessons are usually not sufficient. We should often utilize Sundays to read reference books. In this way we will increase our knowledge. Besides, we must be engaged in sports or outing so as to strengthen our bodies.

HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY 誠(chéng)為上策

There is an English proverb which says (saying) ―Honesty is the best policy.‖ It signifies the importance of honesty.

What are the benefits of honesty? If you are honest to others, they will be honest to you in return. When you are sad, they will comfort you. When you are in trouble, they will help you.

There is no enumerating the evils of dishonesty here. In a word, a dishonest man will be looked down upon by others and (be) regarded as a public enemy.

If our bodies are not strong, our spirit to do things will certainly be quite dull. And at the same time, we are lack of energy (ies) to study. Diseases will only attack the weak, but not the strong. Why are our bodies not strong? Because we do not pay attention to exercise. For this reason, we students must often take different kinds (sorts) of exercise in the gym.

Exercise helps us (to) strengthen our bodies and avoid disease. It also teaches us cooperation, for most exercise is played by team.

第十四天:THE BENEFITS OF TRAVELING 旅行的益處

I am always interested in traveling. My reasons are quite (extremely) simple and clear. If anybody is not satisfied with my viewpoint(s), I shall be greatly surprised at his ways of thinking.

In the first place, traveling increases our knowledge. Only by traveling can we see (因?yàn)橛茫╫nly)開(kāi)頭,主動(dòng)詞須顛倒)things outside our home town.

In the second place, traveling is good to our health. While we are traveling, we usually exercise our bodies.

In conclusion, I earnestly hope that everybody must seize (grasp at) the opportunity of traveling.

HOW TO BE A GOOD CITIZEN 如何做一個(gè)好公民

My aim is to become a good citizen so as to be able to render service to the (my) country. However, to become a good citizen is not an easy thing. He has many duties to fulfill.

The first duty of a good citizen is to love his country. He is to (must) be ready to sacrifice even his own life for the country.

His second duty is to obey the law and help the government (to) maintain order. If everybody can do so, the country will be rich and strong (powerful).

第十六天:THE NATIONAL FLAG 國(guó)旗

it is the duty of every citizen to honor the national flag. Why? Because the national flag is the symbol of a (the) country. To respect it means to respect the country. In other words, if a man loves his country, he must love the national flag.

In school, the national flag is usually raised at a certain time every day. Then the principal, teachers, staff and students are to (must) stand before it and sing the national anthem. It is indeed extremely meaningful to attend such a ceremony.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION

It is impossible for us to make our country rich and strong without developing education. Why? Because education gives people knowledge and teaches them how to become good citizens so as to be able to serve their country. No wonder they say that education decides the progress, prosperity and civilization of a country.

At present (Nowadays) most countries in (of) the world are enforcing compulsory education. It is necessary for all kinds of people, both rich and poor, to receive education. Taiwan is an exception as well not.

It is a matter of course that industry will bring us success, wealth and good luck. I am sure that a hard-working person can always succeed in the work which he wants to do. This is unchangeable truth.

Idleness is the opposite of industry. It is the source of all evil. An idle man only enjoys playing and making pleasures. That he is doomed to failure is of no doubt. We should not follow his example.

My native town is X. We have settled down here since my grandfather was a child. In other words, my family has lived here for more than one hundred years.

It is a small village. There are about one thousand inhabitants. Most of them are farmers. The mode of their living is very simple. However, they have already possessed television sets and refrigerators. They made up their minds to live a modern life.

        第二十天:MY SCHOOL LIFE 我的學(xué)校生活

When I was six years old, I began to go to school. The first school (which) I attended was a primary school. There were many subjects (which were taught in the school, such as Chinese, arithmetic, history, geography, drawing and so forth. Since I was (became) a student, I studied very hard. My parents were quite proud of me.

After I had studied there for three years, I entered a junior high school. When I was twelve years old, I became a student of a senior high school. I still studied very hard. Except on sick leave I was never absent from class. Everybody looked upon me as a model student.
