Being called the first largest city of China, Shanghai, attracts numerous people to struggle for their dream. Some of them have settled here for further development, while others returned in disappointment after weathering wind and rain. Thanks to its peculiar economic, cultural, and historical background as well as its irreplaceable political and economic position, Shanghai has become China’s most cosmopolitan metropolis and the earliest city of migration in China.
All world civilization integrates and all cultures, west and east, greatly contend no matter whether in the old or new Shanghai, or in the east or west. In every street and alley, every corner of Shanghai, ideas and attitudes, fashion and conservation, loneliness and happiness are suffusing, mixing and integrating.
Shanghai is too large for one to find her borders. One seems unable to find his or her goal when walking on the street that is empty at some times and crowded at others. It is hard for one to integrate into Shanghai when spending most time moving.
Shanghai is prosperous. The western European buildings of unique style, the intricate overpasses, the busy commercial streets as well as the crowded streets make one feel dazzled. However, behind the scene, are the “pigeon nests” and the street scenes of the bamboo tubes wrapped in electric wires particular to old Shanghai.
Life is rich and colorful in Shanghai. One can relax in bars, enjoy music at music halls, and engage in shopping and visit Shanghai beach. But all these cost a lot. People in Shanghai crush for coaches and wait for public buses, to race against time on the subway in hustle and bustle, all wearing an exhausted look. In the huge crowds of people, the high buildings and mansions give one a sense of depression and loneliness. However, people who live in Shanghai are proud of her and they happily struggle for their own homes.
For a transient visitor, Shanghai is a mysterious place, filled with alluring power. Out of her tri-dimensions, though having tried every means to slow down your steps, you still can’t comprehend her character and emotion in any real sense when standing besides the Huangpu River or walking into the sea of people.
Though we are not able to see clearly her appearance and clothes and it is hard to feel her pulse, even to hear her breath, the words expressed in front of cameras are always simple and calm, which perhaps is the real existence in depth.
