What can warm your heart is always the sincerity of other people.
Jinan is a city where you can meet gentle and beautiful hearts. In 2004, for the first time, I came to teach in Shandong University. In two full years, I got to know many honest and diligent students. During the time, my heart was baptized. In 2006, after ending my teaching, I went back to Japan and lived an ordinary life every day. However, I often recalled my life in Jinan bit by bit. So, two years later, in 2008, I decided to come back Jinan again. Then, I had the opportunity to live another three years of life in warm Jinan.
In 2004, I lived at the fifth floor of a six-storey building. I got familiar with a gentleman repairing bicycle by the road. Once, seeing I had bought a pot of flowers, he paused in his work and helped me to move it to the fifth floor. I offered him some money to express my thanks. He kept on waving his hands saying “No! No!” With a broad heart, he could cast aside that period of unhappy history to show kindness to a Japanese visitor: this is something I will remember all my life. Thanks to his introduction, I got familiar with the man who sold flowers. Every time I met him, he passed me a cigarette.
In 2008, when I cam to teach in Shandong University again, as soon as I put down my luggage, I went to visit the two gentlemen. As usual, they were still busy with their business by the roadside. After two years, we could not express our happiness for our re-meeting.
To conquer the language barrier, I received support and help from many teachers and students of Shandong University. Shandong is the hometown of Confucius. On this piece of land, the polite respect given to teachers, which the Japanese cannot imagine, is still continued. The students stop to say hello to me; the students volunteer to clean the blackboard for me (In Japan, teachers clean the blackboard by themselves after class.); and the students, whoever they are, volunteer to carry my bag for me. I would like to do whatever I can as a Japanese teacher.
One thing makes feel rather sad is at the western gate of the old campus of Shandong University, previously there was a vendor who sold roast cake in the early morning. I don’t know when he disappeared.I miss the former vigorous commercial scene very much.
Jinan, which gives me many warm memories, is the hometown of my heart that will never be forgotten.
