Ensuring food for the Olympics is healthy and drug-free is a big part of city planning
Doping control measures to ensure up to 30 kinds of food are tested at the 2008 Olympics should be in place by the end of 2006. This is according to the recently held Working Conference on Food Security of Beijing. Moreover, the municipality will monitor food suppliers and producers for the Games in terms of production environment, materials, various security indexes, antibiotics and hormone leftovers. At the same time, the Beijing Municipal Government will also work on drafting security logistics schemes and security control procedures for Olympic food.
This year, Beijing will actively promote the food security project for the Olympic Games and complete the total outline of food security for 2008, said Zhang Zhikuan, director of the Beijing Food Security Office. The outline, issued by the office on September 22, 2005, and examined and passed by the Beijing Municipal Government in October, has plans for food security operations in the next three years.
When fixing a series of security standards for Olympic food, we are drawing up tracing schemes throughout the production process of Olympic food, Zhang added.
According to the Outline of Food Security for the 2008 Olympic Games, key foods, such as rice, flour, oil, meat and milk products must have electronic identity cards--be electronically labeled--and a food security database for the Olympic Games will be set up. The electronic labels, adopting the internationally advanced radio frequency identification technology and other related technologies, are labeled from the first link of agricultural production, tracing the whole process from farmland to dining table. All information in the logistics process can be found in the database via electronic labels, such as production bases, processing enterprises and transportation enterprises. At present, electronic labels have been adopted for trial in the industries of slaughtering and processing as well as meat distribution. During the 2008 Olympic Games, there will be 3,900 items of food in 65 categories under monitoring, up from 550 items in 37 categories at present.
It is estimated that within the two weeks the Olympic Games are held in 2008, Beijing will receive 7.5 million Olympic visitors (including members of Olympic delegations from all the countries, mass media, tourists and spectators). Ensuring food security for the Olympic Games is the major task over the next few years, said Ji Lin, Vice Mayor of Beijing. Since the Olympic Games are held in summer when enteropathy (disease of the intestinal tract) frequently occurs, we specially made related Olympic food security plans, he pointed out.
According to Zhang Zhikuan, Beijing will establish working platforms for testing institutions of Olympic food, determine their working procedures and launch checks on designated suppliers of Olympic food. The government will also carry out research and development of meat products without antibiotics and contraband drugs as well as research of related testing technologies, draw related production standards, promote controlling technologies without antibiotics in the designated breeding farms and establish necessary technological guarding facilities.
By now, Beijing has invested nearly 800 million yuan in upgrading 181 markets, sped up establishing food logistics systems and set up demonstration bases of new vegetable varieties for the Olympic Games. Under strict implementation of the imported food admission system, the municipality has introduced more than 300 vegetable varieties in 150 categories based on research of vegetable supplies of previous Olympic Games and investigations of vegetable and food structures in more than 60 countries.
