In the 150 or so years since the sport began, 攀登者們時刻都在挑戰(zhàn)新的極限 climbers have been highly innovative at putting up bold new lines. Today, Britain"s great crags have been thoroughly explored 布滿劃定的攀登路線 and all littered with climbing routes. This film follows two of Scotland"s best rock athletes, 去探索一種全新的先鋒攀巖 when they take that search for first ascents in a new direction. We join them as they inch their way from darkness into light. This is Climbing...No Limits! This is the Peak District - 位于英格蘭腹地 the centre of England 是現(xiàn)代登山運動的心臟 and the heart of its modern climbing scene. It"s home to numerous cave systems. One of the most famous is Peak Cavern. Today, tourists can explore it, 遵循曾工作生活于此的人們的腳步 along with the lives of the people who once lived and worked here.

But it has another attraction for climbers - 有一種令人驚奇的新運動潛伏于此 a potentially stunning new sport route

它能帶你進入洞穴深處 that starts at the back of the cave entrance 直面陡峭的洞穴石壁 and finishes with a sheer rock wall.

Many sport climbers have wanted to explore here, 但從未獲得過批準

直到現(xiàn)在 but no-one has ever got permission...until now. And there"s an irony.

By pure good luck, it"s not the local experts, 并非來自本地

是兩個路過的蘇格蘭人 but two visiting Scots on a mission who will get the first chance here. This is the biggest unclimbed lump of rock 未曾被攀登過的巨石 in the whole of the Peak District. It really is one of Britain"s most phenomenal limestone caves, 甚至上周我還未曾聽說過它 and I didn"t know it existed before this week. For 400 years, a small community of highly skilled rope-makers 在這大洞穴♥口♥里生活了 400 年 lived in the huge entrance to this cavern. Known as one of the Seven Wonders of the Peak, 它被稱作"惡魔的肛♥門♥" it was originally called the Devil"s Arse, 洞里的村莊從未見過陽光 and the village within it was one that never saw the sun. It"s the largest cave entrance in Britain. A potential Mecca for climbers. I remember my first trip to the Peak District

因為我們即將 and just being so excited because we were going to

步入攀巖世界的中心 the centre of the climbing universe, you know? There are so many routes and so many climbers,

and so this particular cliff stands out massively. Dave MacLeod is one of the world"s great climbers 2010 年中

成就了一系列 someone who has consistently pushed the limits 里程碑式的危險先鋒攀登 with a series of landmark and often dangerous first ascents. Having climbed in the big sea cliffs in the Hebrides 并于冬夏兩季征朋了蘇格蘭高地的山崖 and the mountain cliffs of the Highlands in summer and winter ice,

可以攀登的地方很多 there"s, like, so many places it takes you to. I don"t think there"s many sports that are like that. You normally do a sport in one place, 因此得到的體驗也一成不變 so the experience of doing it stays kind of the same. But, in climbing, you go to all sorts of different places 我認為這是它最獨特的地方 and I think that"s what"s special about it. Joining Dave in this foray onto English rock is Alan Cassidy. He"s been a member of the British team, 在全英攀巖大賽中獲得過季軍 came third in the UK"s lead climbing competition 此外

在過去十三年里 and in the last 13 years

他還完成了蘇格蘭和英格蘭地區(qū) has done over 200 of the hardest sports climbing routes

最難的二百條攀登路線 in both Scotland and England.

Alan also needs to earn a living 一家新建的攀巖學校中工作 and works at the new Climbing Academy in Glasgow.

Climbing is pretty much the be all and end all of my life 埃蘭·卡西迪 攀登幾乎是我生命的全部 and it has been since a very young age. I think it was a shared passion with my father as well.

He introduced me to it. It has a lot of happy memories.

As I was growing up, I was always aware of him going away, 他每逢周末與朊友一起去攀巖的情形 disappearing at weekends with his friend to go climbing. It was really exciting on the first day that I got taken out

我媽媽還給我照相留念 to do that with him, and my mum has a photograph of me 我肩上扛著繩子

笑得非常開心 with the rope round my shoulder with a big beaming face. You know, the first chance to do my dad did, 他在我心中一直都是個英雄 so he was always like the hero. It"s an obscure thing to do, climbing rocks, 但它能奇跡般地牢牢吸引你的生活 but it"s amazing how it can take hold of your life.

With that in mind, Dave and Alan are heading south

挑戰(zhàn)新路線 for that ultimate climbers prize - new routes. They"ve got just one week 哈德良長城 計劃的終點為德比郡山頂洞 and plan to end it in Peak Cavern in Derbyshire. But, on the way south, 有一個他們不能錯過的地方 there"s an opportunity they just can"t miss,

山頂洞 英格蘭 因此他們將在約克郡山谷稍作停留 so they"ll be making a stop in the Yorkshire Dales.

And why Yorkshire? The answer"s simple. 作為英國最大的郡 England"s largest county contains 這里有著全國最令人興奮的眾多洞穴 some of Britain"s most exciting cave systems. 攭匮?One of the local favourites is Jingling Pot. No-one"s ever climbed here before. Dave and Alan plan to change that. But, life underground is unfamiliar

令人毛骨悚然 and the territory, intimidating. One big reason why climbers go climbing is to feel the space 群山環(huán)繞的遼闊感覺 of the mountains around you,

因此置身于陰暗潮濕的狹隘洞穴中 so being in a really enclosed, wet, dark space 并非什么吸引人的差事 in a cave isn"t always such an attractive thing. I think a lot of people think I"m absolutely mental, 因為大多數(shù)攀登者不會愿意 cos it"s not really the sort of thing that most climbers get up to, 深入洞坑探索攀巖線路 going down potholes to put up routes. So, I think, most of my climbing friends thought it was really crazy, 我自己也覺得這挺瘋狂的 and I think I thought it was pretty crazy as well. So, I don"t know.

During the next few days, 兩人將要學著適應(yīng)陌生的新環(huán)境 the climbers will have to learn to adapt to a strange new world. 人們認為攀巖是危險的 People think climbing"s dangerous, 但攀登者看到探洞穴者會想 but climbers look at what potholers do and think,

         "不

他們才是瘋子" "No, they are nutters." A few miles north of Ingleton village, 有一條小路橫穿連綿的約克郡群山 there"s a short walk across the rolling Yorkshire hills 直達叮當壺穴的入口 to the entrance of Jingling Pot.

Ah, is this it here?

- And dark. - And dark! Woah, it goes a long way down.

You can just see down the next shaft. It just looks amazing. There"s all these flutings 就是流水雕刻出來的 where the water"s, like, scalloped it out. 看起來很漂亮 It looks really beautiful, actually. Rock climbers, I guess they appreciate as much as any folk 都會覺得這種被水或冰川 the sort of forms that rock takes from nature, 自然雕琢出的巖石非常迷人 formed by water or glaciers or whatever.

But I"ve never seen anything like this. It"s incredible.

To start the climb, Alan and Dave must descend down a narrow series

被稱為側(cè)裂的狹窄通道滑到穴底 of slippery tracks and shafts known as lateral cleft. When they get to the bottom, they"ll be in a large cavern. Only then can they start their climb back into daylight. They can"t make this climb without the expert help 馬特·伯克的專業(yè)幫助 of local caver, Matt Burke. For years, he"s been telling climbers they should enter his world. I think that if more climbers knew what we had underground,

他們會十分震驚的 they would be astonished. And I think, actually, there are lots and lots of caves 值得攀登 that could be climbed by climbers. A real whole new world for them.

See you later, Dave. Good luck! Caving, for me, provided much more of an adventure feel. You feel like you"re on a mini expedition every time you go caving, 我認為洞穴探險

特別是約克郡的深洞 so I think caving, particularly in the deep caves in Yorkshire, 比起攀巖更像是登山運動 is more akin to big mountaineering than it is to rock climbing.

This next bit just looks crazy. It"s really narrow.

-只有裂縫大小 - There"s a squeeze. - Crack. Yeah. Still not convinced I know why people are possessed to go caving.

There"s a cliche that"s used by cavers very often 其他人想必也聽說過 and lots of people have heard it,

你永遠不知道 which is that you never know 下一個拐角會遇見什么 what you"ll find round the next corner.

And I think it"s difficult to understand that 否則是很難理解的 until you"ve experienced it, actually. I can"t see anything at all. It"s just this little narrow ledge. But I can"t really see the way ahead, yet.

I need to shuffle along.

Oh, no, hang on! I can see it now. It"s just like quite a narrow hole. 沒錯 Right. We think at the moment that we"ve have found

可能只占約克郡山谷的三分之二 maybe two thirds of the caves existed in the Yorkshire Dales, 因此這里依然很刺♥激♥ so there"s a real incentive there, 鼓勵著人們繼續(xù)尋找 a real driver for people to go and keep looking.

-我等不及要去看看 - This chamber is just amazing. - Yeah, I can"t wait to see it. Do you see through the gaps into the main chamber?

Oh, brilliant! - And it"s huge!

令人嘆為觀止 It"s really massive. It"s a bit less claustrophobic down here. It opens out quite a lot.

- The rock formations are just, like, really beautiful. Oh, wow, all the stalactites and things. I feel like we"ve been down here already for absolutely ages.

It seems like we"ve come down miles. It"s hard to imagine that...

We"ve still got lots more to go. - We"ve still got more to go.

         是

Yeah, I know, I know. I get the feeling that, as much as this is going to be 但我不可能不會再來了 a brilliant experience, I"m not sure I"ll take up caving.

There"s something quite nice about dry rock and just being able to 透口氣再張望一番 wander about and have space. I"m still trying not to think about the fact that

只完成了一半的任務(wù)這一事實 this is only the first half of the adventure 而且我們還得靠自己的力氣 and we actually have to get back out of this thing

原路返回 under our own steam.

- You can"t just climb up the rope.

Right, I"m going to head down then, Alan.

OK, good luck. Last descent. 走起

         OK, here I go.

-是嗎 - Looks nice and spacious down there at the bottom. - Yeah. Yeah, much more spacy abseil this time. Oh, cool, more cracks heading off into the darkness 一直延伸到黑暗中 in this direction as well. 這絕對是我見過的最夸張的地方了 "It"s definitely the craziest place I"ve ever been."

-好的 - That"s me on the floor now. - OK. It"s really cool, it"s, like,

這里就像一間大密室 just a big flat chamber, like a big room.

I"m glad we"re not going any further.Goning back out. There"s, like, bones and things. From the last guy that tried to climb out!

- The adventure begins now. Alan and Dave are now at the start of their route. The rock is dark and unfamiliar.

It"s also wet, which will make the climbing a lot harder. Alan leads the first pitch. Not good.

Did something just

從你剛才固定的地方掉下來了 break off that you were holding onto there?

Eh, yeah, just a really thin flake that I had in my hand there.

You got the first hand. Told you that should pull it. There"s actually a lot less handholds and if there were.

It"s a little bit off-putting, that first hold breaking.

-是 - It just makes you question everything, doesn"t it? - Yeah. Looks like quite a tricky wee move, here. 好的 Ok. 攀巖是項很依賴感覺的運動 "Climbing is a very sensory activity." 干得好 Well done. Can you reach that next splitting now? 難說 Not quite. You"re relying on how the holds feel in your hands 以及腳下蹬踏的感覺 and under your feet, 同時還需要開闊的視野 but your also relying on

來規(guī)劃下一步路線 sight to be able to plan the next move 確保能穩(wěn)穩(wěn)支撐 and make sure you have the hold. Climbing in the dark seems preposterous. You"re going to have to rely a lot more on just that sense of touch 還要對你的保護措施以及隊友有信心 and faith in your protection and that your partner is still there, 即使事實上你根本看不見他們 despite the fact that you can"t see them.

If it wasn"t so damp, 這里其實是個很好的支點 you can hold on to pretty much anything on this. I"m kind of over-gripping a little bit... 令人堪憂 ..as it is. Ooh, I don"t like this bit. Just have a tiny little crimpy hold here. Ooh! Are they incut enough that you"ll be able to pull on them properly?

-好 - Well, I just feel like I could slip off them. - Yeah. You"re going to have to stand on something small for your foot.

Alan is struggling to see a way forward. 我剛剛在哪來著 Where was I before? He needs to find the right sequence of moves to make progress. 而這里險峻的環(huán)境 In this alien environment, 讓他很難相信自己的直覺 he finds it hard to trust his own judgment.

-沒錯 - Actually more awkward than I thought it would be. - Yeah. 慢慢來 Takes time. 繼續(xù) Go on.

-好的 - I"m just going to come back down to this good hold... - OK.

Alan needs to commit to a line soon, 走錯一步就可能招致滅頂之災(zāi) but, a wrong move could mean a fall, 而這無疑會毀掉他們這次首登 and that could jeopardise their chances of a successful first ascent. I think the shadows cast by my head torch make it hard to see 我的腳放在什么地方 where I"m placing my feet. Is that like a sloping pinch you"ve got for your left hand? 能

Yeah, it"s incut and...

-是 - Going to go inside? Oh, good! - Yeah. At the last second there, I spotted a foothold out to the right. It made all the difference. 很好 Great. 這還真濕啊 Aww, that one"s really wet!

It"s all very wet, but that one"s really wet! That one"s got an ocean in it. I"m watching you on the rope. 繼續(xù) Go on.

-正好能夠到 - Is that a hold? - Just about.

At last, Alan"s successfully found a way through the problem 即將完成第一節(jié)距 and he"s nearly at the end of the first pitch. You must be almost at the stance now.

         - Yeah. I"m just below it. - Great. I"ve just got to run my feet up. Or try and do it in one big flexible move.

Yeah, it means it"s going to be my turn soon.

I have to say, I was exceptionally pessimistic when I set off, 不過其實還是蠻成功的 but that was actually really good, -沒有像我想象的那么糟糕

-太好了 - and not quite as bad as I thought it would be. - Brilliant.

- Yeah! Yeah, it looks excellent. I"m quite looking forward to coming up. I wasn"t sure how much I was going to enjoy it. I"m not the biggest fan of getting really scared, -但其實還蠻不錯的

-對 - but it was actually all right. - Yeah.

OK, you"re off belay,

準備好就開始吧 so taking the rope when you"re ready. 我早就摩拳擦掌了 Eager to get started.

Get some blood moving, get warm. Contending with the dark and struggling with wet rock, 這段攀爬的困難程度遠超埃蘭的想象 this pitch was far tougher than Alan expected, 使他倍感難受 and it"s taken him well outside his comfort zone.

It was completely novel. I was just gripping on for dear life 我?guī)缀醵际敲鼞乙痪

我就在想 most of the time, thinking,

這也太滑了 "Oh, my word, this is so slippery!" 不過確實非常有趣 "But, yeah, it was actually really good fun."

Nice, Dave. There was a whole different element to it that

I"ve never experienced on a rock climb before. I was really quite worried. I didn"t actually think

I was going to be able to climb that first pitch at all.

-是的 - There"s not much for feet here, is there? - No, it"s... It"s all in the arms, here. Strain your... Pull. Dave joins Alan at the belay. He knows his hard work is only just beginning. He will lead the long second pitch

而且不知道繩子是否夠用 and is undecided about the line. I"m really unsure which way to go. I was quite keen to go into this chimney,

但或許我能試著 but I think maybe i"ll try and go out

爬到那面石壁的中間去 into the middle of the wall in this scoop.

It looks very steep and smooth from below,

希望能夠發(fā)現(xiàn) but I just hope that 幾條比較好攀登的裂縫 the good fluting is going to appear at the last minute, 因為要是沒有的話

恐怕就出不去了 because if they don"t, then, it could not be possible. So, I"m really apprehensive, actually. I really can"t wait to

開始攀爬了 get started and go for it.

Ah, that"s much better in your options, right enough.

Nice use of the knee, Dave.

Yep, winter climbing tactics. 當你攀爬干燥的巖石時 With normal dry rock climbing, 你能感覺到什么時候你要失手摔落 you can tell when you"re getting close to falling off. But with this, you had to have quite a lot of reserve, 因為你的手或腳隨時都可能滑脫 because if a hand or a foot were to slip it would be so sudden. Unless you had really good handholds, 否則你根本無法多作停留 there"s no way you could stay on. Even when you were on climbing

難度很低的巖段時 and it was quite easy to make progress, 你也得時刻小心不得出錯 you really had to be aware not to make a mistake, 因為一旦脫手

你就完了 cos if one thing just slipped a little bit, you"d be off. OK. OK, I might fall off here.

         繼續(xù)

戴夫 Go on, Dave. 不賴 Nice. 干得好 Nicely done. 我得繞過來才能繼續(xù) Just had to kind of fall round and get it.

Yeah, that looked like a hard move. 好的

繼續(xù)爬 OK, moving up again. 好的

         加油 OK, go on. 通常

對于攀巖者來說 Normally, for rock climbers, 我們會覺得爬濕巖石的感覺就像 we would think a stretch of wet rock on a climb was, like,

We"ve got endure this?" But I think cos the climber was completely wet 而且事先也預(yù)料到了 and because you were expecting it, 所以其實挺享受的 you actually really enjoyed it.

-是嗎 - Oh, the handhold just broke just as I moved. - Really? Woah! Did you have your heart in your mouth there?

Yeah, I was almost off, there.

-好的 - I"m going to step up and left a bit. - OK, yeah.

          So, if I fall off,

I"m going to go a long way, 因為那個保護結(jié)可能會脫開 cos I think that knot will pull out.

OK, I"m just going to head to the right now.

         好的

好運 OK, good luck. I"ve got a run round which is kind of OK-ish. 很好 Good. All of our normal outdoor rock climbs are given a grading. You can normally get a fairly good idea, 心里就大概能知道這個巖段是什么等級 even by looking at a climb, what grade it"s going to be, 然后決定爬不爬 and certainly by doing it.

They"re quite consistent, the grades. But grading something

排等級真不太可能 that"s wet is almost impossible. I think you have to have, obviously, 可供比對的分級制度 an alternative grading system 也就是能爬還是爬不了 which is just like, possible or impossible? You either get up it or you can"t.

-你很棒 - That"s good. - Excellent. I think I"m definitely have to go left here, 上面突然變陡

而且一片空白 as it just steepens up and gets really blank above me. It"s positively overhanging up there.

OK, mate, a tricky move.

         是的

加油 OK. Go for it. 加油 Go on! 干得好

戴夫 Wow. Good effort, Dave.

-加油 - Watch this here, my man. - Go on! 這個落腳點不錯 Is a good foothold...

-是啊 - but it"s just all sloping for the hand. - Yeah.

-好 - Watch this here. - Yeah.

That was a sketchy one. - Well done.

That"s better. I"m much happier now. I"m stood properly on my feet again. Dave"s now halfway up the pitch. He"s doing incredibly well, 特別是在沒能事先視察路線準備好的前提下 especially as they"ve had no time to prepare and inspect this route. As they climb, they"ve had to work out where to put the equipment 防止不慎跌落 that will protect them in case they fall.

I"m going to have to go left cos the wall above me 傾斜度太大

而且光滑得一片空白 starts to overhang and it"s just completely blank and really smooth, 我得進入那個寬裂縫

試著爬上去 so I"m going to go into this chimney and try and climb up that. I"ve still got quite a long way to go.

Gets me in the base of the chimney, Alan.

Right, OK. And how does that look? 既泥濘又濕滑 Really slimy and slippery. So, it"s going to be, like, not too easy to actually climb, 但至少它能容得下我 but at least, you know, it is a chimney. I should be able to hopefully get some jams and things in there.

Just going to have to be very careful. 看這里 Just watch this here. The rock, now, is starting to get green,

我們快到頂部了 like, moss and slime cos we"re getting closer to the top now. So, the friction"s not nearly as good. Before, I could actually stand on quite sloping footholds.

Not too bad, but now it"s worse. Actually, I think the chimney"s about to get a fair bit harder. 真難搞 It"s so awkward. 我沒法以想要的方式移♥動♥ I can"t move them the way I want to.

My feet aren"t on anything. I"m just jamming myself! 完全懸空了 Totally wedged in there.

If I can get up a couple more feet, I can get a foothold. 加油 Go on!

I"m just, like, chest jamming. 加油

戴夫 Go on, Dave! Ah, that"s a bit better!

-現(xiàn)在的位置好多了 - Totally wedged in there. - I"m in a much better position now. 很好

干得好 Nice, well done. It"s funny chimneys are like that.

It"s really desperate one second, and then as soon as you 頓時得到解脫 get into the footholds again, you"re fine. Do you know, I think I might be close to a good belay ledge.

Good. That"s some pitch you"ve done. I just turned round and there"s a great big ledge behind me.

I think I"m there!

         干得好 Brilliant, well done!

OK, I"ll just be two minutes and then it"ll be your turn.

相當有挑戰(zhàn) It"s a brilliant pitch. Really long. The hard part was the first third, really, 因為那部分的巖石上 cos there was a good few spots

雖然有一些可供安裝保護點的位置 where I got protection in the rock, 但我過得并不輕松 nuts or cams, but I wasn"t really happy with it.

And there"s quite a few ledges, so if you fell off 以免不慎下滑時沒有抓住平臺 you"d have to be a bit careful that you didn"t catch a ledge.

-我想是的 - Is that you at the tricky move now? - Yeah. I think so. 確實如此 That"s the one.

-的確很穩(wěn) - A bit balancey, isn"t it? - Yeah, really balancey. You just had to take your time, 確保每一步都穩(wěn)穩(wěn)當當?shù)?and then you could just make sure you were solid on every move

這樣就能一點一點往上爬 and then it was OK to make progress.

Wow, Dave, I"m really impressed with this...

-是嗎 - this lead. - Yeah.

         -對 - But, very smeary feet. - Yeah.

I"ll remember the experience of going down Jingling for a long time. I think it"s kind of awakened an inner-caver inside me. Not that I think I"m going to be rushing down any potholes 但是吧 any time soon, but,

從陌生世界中努力尋求那一絲光明 yeah, it"s really interesting to have a light shone 真的是件很有趣的事情 upon a world I don"t really know much about.

You know, when you look down before you see the rope, 你都沒法弄清它到底有多深 you can"t get a sense of how far it is. But when you see the rope disappearing down

只能看到巖石上的那些保護點 and you can see your protection clip on the rock

埃蘭正在往上爬 and you can see Alan away down there, 這時你會覺得 you"re like, "Wow, 如此高度居然都才到第二間距 that"s really far and that"s only the second pitch." It"s a big hole. I reckon if there had been

有那么一米 a spot in the first part of that pitch 沒有落腳點的話 where there was another metre without a hold, 我們就根本爬不上來了 it just wouldn"t be possible at all.

It"s amazing how it"s just all there.

Climbing"s often like that, I think. It only just works.

-非常好 - There we go. - Nice one.

Good one. Cers!

- Yeah, it was amazing. So varied. There was a bit of everything, really -

底部可以走得很平穩(wěn) technical balancey moves at the bottom

難以想象 and then thrutching and chimneys. Incredible!

And every time I looked down at my feet it was just into the abyss.

非常棒 - It was incredible. - I know, it"s great.

不遠了 - It"s only about 20ft to go or something? - Yeah, not far to go.

I can see the trees and fresh air. I"m fancying up this chimney up here. -好

-陽光下見 - All right, see you at the top, man. - See you in the daylight! Looking forward to getting out of this hole, I have to say. Are you going for a grovel and a hovel? I"m going for a grovel.

There"s actually a dry hold here, believe it or not. I"ll believe it when I see it! 蠕動 Squirm! 我一邊爬一邊自創(chuàng)新技術(shù) I"m inventing a technique as I go. What"s your new technique? It"s like the backwards caterpillar.

好吧 The backwards caterpillar? Okay.

Oh, I can see daylight. - Excellent.

-真是個好消息 - I"m out of here. - Good news. Dave and Alan have put up the first climbing route in Jingling Pot. Climbers give all of their routes a grade. But this one has been almost impossible to define. A3 In the end, we settle for A3, 難度系數(shù)非常高 a respectable hard grade.

更重要的是 More importantly, 他們的成功為那些富有創(chuàng)新精神的后續(xù)攀爬者 their achievement is one that could open up 開啟了一個全新的世界 a whole new world for enterprising climbers.

Daylight. Here we are.

Yes! - Well done!

-沒錯 - Excellent! - Yeah. I"m just amazed that we actually made it happen... I was really doubting it at the start. I was a bit intimidated to start with. It was so wet though, 實在沒辦法不擔心 you can"t blame us for being worried about it. It certainly gives you an appreciation 我們原本看不到的風景 of a part of the landscape that we wouldn"t have known, 作為攀巖者 and you think as rock climbers,

征朋懸崖峭壁固然令人心喜 we would have appreciated a lot of the cliffs and crags we climb on 但攀登洞穴

還是第一次 have got these caves, we"ve never been in them. Most climbers would be satisfied with one new first ascent. But our team now move on. 90 miles south of the rolling moors of Yorkshire, 是德比郡峰區(qū)的深谷
