I gave up my dream before coming to Peking University. But I consider myself pretty lucky. If I was cast in a TV show, I’d be the one who dies in the second episode.

To search for a star, you first need a ladder. You also need something to pick up the star as it is really hot and will burn your hands.

My name is He xiaodong. I grew up poor. I’m not good looking and my life’s dream is a joke.

So how do we define a person? Not by where he comes from but by where he is going.

If a dream is a suit of clothes, then Astronomy would be a brand that I couldn’t afford to wear.

For over a hundred years now, people like us work their way up despite the laughter of others.

The stars are not for me. I’m sick of all the laughter.

People like me are never dealt a good hand. We just have to play with the cards we get.

I need to learn to face reality.

Peking University is really like a magical ladder I dreamt of as a child, and help me see the forest for the trees.

        Dreams are the ultimate reality.

For the past for years, I’ve been forcing myself grow up and face reality.

It is nor reality that inspires your dreams, but your dreams that inspires reality.

If you live only once, then why not live for your dreams first?

        Journal to the stars

I gave up my dream before coming to Peking University.

But I consider myself pretty lucky.

If I was cast in a TV show, I’d be the one who dies in the second episode.

To reach for a star, you first need a ladder.

You also need something to pick up the star as it is really hot and will burn your hands.

        -I want to study Astronomy.

-Astronomy? What is that good for? Damn it!

        I grew up poor.

I’m not good looking and my life’s dream is a joke.

From this day on, I’m not going to be a joke anymore.

Peking University is going to be a new beginning.

I’m studying at China’s most prestigious university.

I am surrounded by the most amazing teachers and classmates.

        I study Economics.

I got tuition wavier from the school and I am working my way through college.

My new life is going to be a list that’s all been checked.

So how do we define a person? Not by where he comes from but by where he is going.

I’ve tried forgetting about those silly stars

but the problem is Peking University has countless classes you can just walk into at any time.

        Countless classes for countless dr

        eams.

I find myself occasionally going to the Astronomy classes as a reward.

The universe is infinite in its vastness. Infinite?

        -Hey, what’s your major?

-Professor, I don’t major in Astronomy.

-Come over here. Come and give me a hand with some time.

        To infinity and beyond!

You dream of reaching for the stars? Nice!

Have you considered changing your major to Astronomy?

-I promised my dad to get a job as soon as I graduate and help with debts at home.

Astronomy is just a dream I can’t afford. People think it’s a joke.

        -A joke?

Well then, let’s have a laugh about it then.

        Come on laugh with me!

        Finished laughing? So what?

For over a hundred years now, people like us work their way up despite the laughter of others.

Under the encouragement of Professor Wang, I minored in Astronomy.

Professor Wang once said, PKU is the only place in China where you don’t have to worry about

        being laughed at.

Thanks, but the stars are not for me.

I’m sick of all the laughter.

        Age 18

When my mother died wo ended up with a lot of debt. I changed my major to Economics.

If a dream was a suit of clothes, then Astronomy would be a brand that I couldn’t afford to wear.

Reading all those books ging to get you paid?

People like me are never dealt a good hand.

We just have to play with the cards we get.

I need to learn to face reality.

What the hell are you reading? Didn’t you hear me nerd?

Apologize immediately! You can’t treat the customers like this!

The girl of my dreams moved to America with her family. I didn’t get to say goodbye. If you can’t give the woman you like a castle to live in, you should just leave her alone and give

        up.

Sick for a week with the flu, I was ranked first in my Economics class and my Astronomy essay

won a Winter Camp prize, but I still didn’t go.

Peking University is really like the magical ladder I dreamt of as a child and help me see the forest

        for the trees.

I was offered an opportunity to continue studying Astronomy for a Master Degree. Professor Wang asks for my decision.

-You can join the Astrophysics graduate thesis project along with students in our major.

If you succeed in winning the hearts of the judges on stage, you will get a postgraduate recommendation. But if you fail, it might affect your chances of getting a job.

        Will you take the chance?

This means nothing in the real world.

This is what matters on the job.

I got so drunk that I passed out.

The boss told me:”Wake up soon, time to stop dreaming.”

I decided to give up the thesis project and the Mast recommendation.

        Farewell my stars.

        Back to reality.

When they told me I was the first in my class to get an offer from a multinational investment bank,

I seemed to have achieved my original goals.

I’m no longer worried about being laughed at. Never again.

I finally have what it takes to tell her about my feelings.

I’ve been told a thousand times by everyone to stop dreaming.

But Professor Wang told me: Dreams are the ultimate reality.

For the past four years, I’ve been forcing myself to grow up and face reality.

All this time, Peking University has been quietly trying to tell me something more important.

It is not reality that inspires your dream, but your dream that inspires reality.

I gave up my job at the bank and started to work on my graduation project.

        Twinkle Star

        Farewell reality.

Back to the land of starry dreams.

Dear judges and fellow classmates, for our final show I would like to introduce to you HeXiaodong, an economics student, who minored in astronomy, to present his project to you as

        well.

Dear judges, how about giving this young man a chance to fulfill his dreams?

        Of course! Go ahead!

Stop chasing for things that out of your league.

If you only live once, for over a hundred years now, people like us work their way up despite the

        laughter of others.

Then why not live for your dreams first?

        WE BELIEVE IN DREAMS!
