China is a land of bicycles. At least itwas back in 1992 when I traveled thecountry. Back then everyone seemedto ride a bicycle. Up and downChang’an Avenue that runs across the centerof the city you would see people on bicycles.Millions of them. And all bicycles wereblack and would only go as fast as you couldpedal. Cars were rare. They were a presenceon the busy streets but most citizens did notown one.
